Fixed-term for 1-year
Full-time at 37.5 hours per week

Job Summary
The Senior Policy Analyst – Fish Habitat, in reporting to the Senior Conservation Biologist – Freshwater Ecology, will provide policy support and strategic advice to inform CWF’s advocacy for improvements to regulatory and management approaches used by Fisheries and Oceans Canada and Environment and Climate Change Canada to implement the Fisheries Act. Priority topics include the management of fish passage and small projects. The Senior Policy Analyst will assess and synthesize national and international trends and regulatory frameworks and develop recommendations for improvements. The Senior Policy Analyst will work with a team of biologists and spatial analysts at CWF along with external conservation partners.

Who we are looking for:
  • Excellent communication (written and oral) skills in English with demonstrated professional writing experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of the Fisheries Act habitat-protection provisions, including changes over time and strengths and weaknesses.
  • Ability to think critically and strategize within political and bureaucratic environments.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and judgment, and a high degree of initiative and versatility.
  • Capacity to work in a self-directed manner and demonstrated ability to work well within a team setting.
  • Passion for conservation and recovery of wildlife.
Responsibilities:
  • Provide strategic policy advice and prepare recommendations, briefing notes, reports, and statements on behalf of the organization.
  • Review Canada’s regulatory frameworks for aquatic barriers and small project and identify strengths and weaknesses.
  • Research, analyze, and evaluate international fish-habitat-management frameworks and identify successful models and case studies.
  • Recommend reforms and improvements to provincial and federal legislative, regulatory, policy and implementation frameworks to improve protection of fish habitat.
  • Collaborate with other NGOs, Indigenous organizations, scientists, government officials, and industry to gather insights on fish-habitat protection and opportunities for improvement.
  • Represent the organization on external committees and working groups and assist with the development of joint letters and submissions.
  • Other duties as assigned
Experience Needed
  • Requires university degree with 3-5 years of relevant work experience in related fields (Biology, Environmental Studies, Law, or Public Policy).
  • Reviewing and analyzing laws, regulations, and government policy.
  • Working with Indigenous Peoples
  • Conducting literature reviews and managing large data sets
  • Writing professional papers, reports and critical analyses

Working Conditions
  • Full-time contract position for 1-year.
  • Location: The ideal candidate will be based out of CWF’s head office in Ottawa, ON. Two days per week working from home is permitted (hybrid working). We are open to accepting remote candidates from anywhere in Canada.
